For decades, families searched with old photos, newspaper ads and fading memories. AI is starting to find people everyone else gave up on.

Kiran was 10 years old when she left her home in Islamabad to buy an ice cream and never came back. Somewhere along the way, she became lost, couldn’t remember her address, and eventually ended up at an Edhi Foundation shelter.

Her family searched for her. Newspapers carried her photograph, and people tried to trace where she belonged, but nothing worked. Kiran grew up in care while her family slowly lost hope. The little girl became a teenager, then a woman. Seventeen years passed before someone finally gave a computer her photograph.

The Face Was Still There

In 2025, the Edhi Foundation asked cybersecurity specialist Nabeel Ahmed to help. He had tools that hadn’t existed when Kiran disappeared. Ahmed found an old missing-person report from Islamabad and used newer photographs of Kiran, pieces of her childhood memories and AI-assisted facial matching to compare the woman she had become with the child who had disappeared.

A face changes a lot between 10 and 27. Hair changes, weight changes, the jaw changes, and even close relatives can struggle to recognize someone after that much time. But some patterns stay, and the system found enough of them to point investigators back toward Kiran’s family.

Her father, Abdul Majeed, had spent years looking for her and had almost given up hope that she was still alive. Then the call came telling him they thought they had found his daughter. He travelled to Karachi, where the 10-year-old who had gone out for ice cream was now a 27-year-old woman. AI hadn’t cured a disease or discovered a new planet. It had helped a father find his child.

Another Family Had Been Searching Too

Thousands of miles away, Avtar Singh had spent most of his life looking for someone he barely remembered. He grew up in India believing the woman raising him was his mother, but she was actually his grandmother. Years later, Avtar learned that his real mother had been another woman from his father’s first marriage. Her name was Savinder, and that was almost all he knew.

Avtar searched for decades. He tried Google, Facebook, archives and family contacts. He followed every lead he could find, but nothing connected. Then, in 2026, at 66 years old, he tried ChatGPT. He entered the scraps of information he had carried around for most of his life: her name, where she might have lived and a few details about her past.

ChatGPT suggested a possible match: Savinder Kaur Nagi. Avtar didn’t trust it immediately because he knew AI could be wrong, but the result pointed him to a real article written by a British jewellery designer named Nicci Dhamu about her mother, Savinder, who had died in 2024.

Avtar started reading and then saw the place name Dhariwal, India. It was his birthplace, and for the first time in decades, the trail was warm.

Then She Called Him Titu

Avtar emailed Nicci, and less than two hours after asking ChatGPT for help, they were talking on the phone. He carefully asked about her mother’s life in India. Nicci explained that her mother had been married before, so Avtar asked whether she had any children from that marriage.

She had a son. Then Nicci asked Avtar whether he was Titu.

That was his childhood nickname. He hadn’t heard it said that way since his grandmother used it when he was a boy, and both Avtar and his wife started crying. After decades of searching, he had found his sister.

He Was Too Late for His Mother

Savinder had died about a year and a half earlier, so after searching for most of his life, Avtar had missed the chance to meet her. But Nicci could finally tell him the part of the story he had never known.

Savinder hadn’t forgotten him. Family members remembered her keeping his baby clothes and crying about the son she had lost. Later in life, even as dementia took away some of her memories, she still cried for him. Nicci had been trying to find him too.

Mother and son had spent decades missing each other without knowing the other was still looking. AI connected them too late for Avtar to see his mother again, but not too late for him to finally learn something he had wondered about his entire life: she had loved him.

Soon afterward, Avtar travelled to Britain to meet Nicci. She took him to see their mother’s surviving brother, and the old man looked at Avtar and remembered him. He had held him as a baby. After decades of searching, Avtar didn’t just find an answer. He found a family.

Then There Was the Baby Who Disappeared for 25 Years

In China, another family had spent even longer waiting. Xie Qingshuai was only three months old when his mother stepped out to buy groceries. She was gone for about 10 minutes, but when she returned, her baby was gone. Someone had taken him.

His parents searched for the next 25 years. They travelled, followed leads and spent huge amounts of money trying to find him. The problem was obvious: a photograph of a three-month-old baby isn’t much help when you’re searching for a 25-year-old man.

So researchers used AI differently. Instead of only comparing Xie’s baby photo with adults, the system also looked at photographs of his parents and brother and searched for family resemblance. It narrowed the search to a small number of people, and one of them was Xie. DNA testing confirmed it.

Twenty-five years after his mother walked back into the house and found an empty room, she saw her son again.

This Is Starting to Happen at Scale

These aren’t just isolated stories. In India, facial-recognition systems have been used to compare photographs of missing children with children living in shelters and care homes. In one 2018 trial, the system produced nearly 3,000 possible matches in four days.

Other police forces have since used similar tools to help identify missing and trafficked children. That doesn’t mean facial recognition is harmless. The same technology that can find a missing child can also be used to track ordinary people without their permission.

But to a parent holding a photograph that is 10 or 20 years old, the technology looks very different. It looks like hope.

AI Doesn’t Know What Any of This Means

The software that helped find Kiran doesn’t understand what it means to lose a daughter. ChatGPT didn’t understand the decades Avtar spent wondering whether his mother remembered him, and the system that helped find Xie didn’t understand what 25 years of waiting did to his parents.

It just saw patterns: a face, a name, a birthplace, an old article, a family resemblance. Humans had been staring at those pieces for years. AI simply got better at connecting them, and on the other side of those connections were people.

A woman returned to the family she had lost as a child. A man heard his childhood nickname from a sister he never knew existed. Parents finally saw the baby they lost, now standing in front of them as a grown man.

We spend a lot of time asking what AI might take away from us.

Sometimes it gives something back.
